The English programs at Rosebud
Secondary College are designed to cater for the different needs and
abilities of all our students. We are committed to developing an
engaging curriculum relating to texts, technology, communication
and writing.
The Literacy skills of all year seven students are assessed and additional
support is given to those who require it, thanks to a team of dedicated
Literacy staff and volunteers. Furthermore, we have an Enhancement
class for students who need more intensive assistance in this area.
There is also a select entry Accelerated Program, in which students
complete Years Seven to Ten in three years. In these classes, we
create a more challenging learning environment for those that are
suitable.
The English Department is proud of the various electives on offer from Year Nine
onwards. In addition to mainstream classes, students can choose from Public Speaking
and Debating, Advanced English and Literature. At VCE level, English is compulsory,
but students can also study Literature and Philosophy.
In terms of mainstream classes, teachers have an excellent knowledge of the various
learning styles and are committed to the development of their students. Take,
for example, the City Experience Project, an integral part of the Year Nine curriculum.
Throughout this project, students learn much about working independently, working
in groups, research and interviewing (to name just a few), culminating in a formal
presentation to their classmates and families.
Furthermore, there are many opportunities for students to enter Poetry, Mini
Saga and short-story competitions. There are also debating and public speaking
teams who compete against other schools.
In short, we make our students’ progress a priority. By offering such
a varied curriculum, we provide students with numerous opportunities to excel.
